Lincolnshire is full of quiet charm — the kind you don’t always see shouted about in travel guides, but the kind that stays with you. If you’re looking for somewhere to share slow days, curious discoveries, and childhood joy, this county has plenty tucked away in its countryside lanes, castle ruins, and nature trails.

This isn’t a list of must-sees or jam-packed itineraries — just a gentle wander through some of our favourite family-friendly places in Lincolnshire, where stories live in stone walls and muddy boots are always welcome.

    Castles & Cathedrals

There’s something magical about stepping into a place where history lingers. Castles and cathedrals might not always come with dragons, but they do come with space to imagine.

    Lincoln Castle

With its 11th-century stone walls and views stretching across the city, Lincoln Castle is the kind of place that invites you to explore slowly. Walk along the battlements, peek into hidden corners, and picture the footsteps of those who came before.

    Tattershall Castle

Tattershall feels like something from a storybook — tall red brick towers, spiral staircases, and views over open countryside. It’s perfect for climbing, imagining, and wandering. There’s something joyful about letting little ones pretend they live in a tower.

    Lincoln Cathedral

Even if you’ve seen pictures, nothing quite prepares you for the inside of Lincoln Cathedral. It’s vast, peaceful, and beautifully detailed — full of stained glass and echoes of centuries past. Children notice different things here: the way light falls through the windows, the carvings on the walls, or how their footsteps sound on stone floors. There is a little Lincoln Imp that is hidden among the arches, and for 20p you can try and spot him!

    Wildlife & Farm Fun

If you’ve got little animal lovers in the family, there are a few lovely places to visit that balance fun with gentle learning.

    Woodside Wildlife Park

Tigers, lemurs, and reptiles — all in a well-kept setting that’s easy to wander. There are talks, feeding times, and plenty of space to walk between enclosures. It feels calm and thoughtful, which makes it especially good for more sensitive little ones.

    Rand Farm Park

Hands-on and heartwarming. Kids can feed lambs, cuddle rabbits, and hop on a tractor ride. It’s a proper working farm with just the right mix of mud, giggles, and gentle learning.

    Nature Walks and Picnic Spots

Whether you want to run off steam or just take a slow walk and notice things, Lincolnshire has some beautiful outdoor spots.

    Whisby Nature Park

With easy-to-follow paths and plenty to spot along the way (ducks, bugs, pond reflections), Whisby is a great space for gentle family walks. There's a visitor centre, a play area, and plenty of space to sit with a flask and snacks.

    The Lincolnshire Wolds

If you like a view and don’t mind a few hills, the Wolds are a quiet, beautiful place to explore. You don’t need to follow a strict trail — sometimes the best bits are the little paths through wildflowers and the sound of the wind through grass.

    Museums with Curiosity Built In

For rainy days (or curious minds), Lincolnshire has some wonderful small museums that offer a hands-on way to explore the past.

    Museum of Lincolnshire Life

From old bicycles and wartime kitchens to Victorian toys and local crafts — this museum is a mix of everything that’s shaped life in the county. It’s the kind of place where you overhear stories from visitors as much as from the exhibits.

    The Collection (Lincoln Museum)

More modern and interactive, with archaeology, art, and science woven together. It’s good for all ages — whether you’re a budding historian, a dinosaur fan, or just like pressing buttons and lifting flaps.

    Quiet Joys & Memory-Making

What I love most about Lincolnshire isn’t just what you can do, but how it feels to spend time here. There’s space. There’s calm. There’s permission to take it slowly and soak up the moments.

Whether you’re exploring a castle, picnicking by a pond, or just walking through an old market town with your children beside you, you’re creating something gentle and meaningful — the kind of memories that settle in like pressed leaves in a journal.
